I was listening to one of my mentors years back. He was saying how guesting on EOFIRE “moved the needle” for his life and business. I thought to myself “I’d like some of that.” I reached out to the host, John Lee Dumas, and he said yes. Appearing as a guest on a podcast can be a great way to reach a new audience and promote your business or expertise. But how do you get booked on a podcast? And what are the best practices for being a great guest?

If you do happen to get booked to be a guest, don’t start out with your elevator or sales pitch. Ugh! Start with a story, or something interesting, or an ah ha moment. Some shows give you direction on what they’d like to interview you about. Then, go with the flow. Just don’t sell on your open. And then if they ask you about your business, don’t go rote and sound like a robot — ugh! Be curious and make sure you listen to a few episodes before you guest. It’s really fun once you get the hang of it.

Years ago when I managed giving for a family foundation, I would ask the question “is it strategic for the foundation to fund this grant.” You might want to look at “would it be strategic for the podcast host to interview me for his audience.” When you focus on providing quality help for the pain points of the audience – you’ve got a winning pitch.

Here are some more practical step-by-step tips on how to be a podcast guest. I started my Podcast Guest journey with a bang, appearing on Entrepreneur on Fire in 2016!

1. Research podcasts in your niche.

The first step is to identify a list of podcasts that your target audience is likely to listen to. You can do this by searching for podcasts in your niche on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, or by asking your friends and colleagues for recommendations. Once you have a list of podcasts, listen to a few episodes of each one to get a sense of the tone and style of the show. Genuine enthusiasm will reflect in your outreach to the host or producer to ask about guesting. Listen to the show. A rookie mistake: asking to guest on a show where the host doesn’t have guests! You’d be surprised how many people do this.

Use podcast directories. There are a number of websites and apps that list podcasts, such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and Podchaser. You can use these directories to search for podcasts by category, keyword, or popularity.

Follow podcasters on social media. Many podcasters have active social media accounts where they promote their episodes and interact with their audience. Following podcasters on social media is a great way to learn more about their shows and to see if they are accepting guests. One of my favorites is Lewis Howe School of Greatness. He’s lively on social media, and always tweets you back.

Read industry blogs and publications. Many industry blogs and publications feature interviews with podcast guests. Reading these articles is a great way to discover new podcasts and to learn about the types of guests that they typically feature. Hey, you’re here reading this now! Perfect example!

Ask your friends and colleagues for recommendations. If you know anyone who has been a guest on a podcast, ask them for recommendations. They may be able to give you some insights into the types of shows that you would be a good fit for. Facebook has a few podcast groups where you can ask to be a guest, too.

Once you have a list of potential podcasts to guest on, narrow it down to a few that are the best fit for you and your audience. Alignment is of great value. I also do “light-heavy” before asking to be a guest. Would guesting on this podcast change my life for the better? Would guesting be enjoyable and fun? Would guesting help others who might need me?

Here are more factors to consider when choosing podcasts to guest on:

Niche: Is the podcast in your niche or area of expertise?

Audience: Does the podcast have an audience that is similar to your target audience?

Format: What is the format of the podcast? Are they solo interviews, co-hosted interviews, or panel discussions?

Quality: Is the podcast well-produced and professional?

Popularity: How popular is the podcast? How many downloads does it get per episode?

Consider the goals that you want to achieve by being a guest on a podcast. Are you looking to promote your business, launch a new product, or share your expertise with a wider audience? Once you know your intention, you can choose podcasts that are aligned.

Once you have narrowed down your list of potential podcasts where you believe you are a good fit, it’s time to start reaching out to the hosts. Be sure to send a personalized pitch that explains why you’re a good fit for the show and what value you can bring to the audience.

2. Craft a personalized pitch.

Once you’ve found a few podcasts that you’re interested in being a guest on, it’s time to send a personalized pitch to the host. Your pitch should be brief and to the point, and it should explain why you’re a good fit for the show and what value you can bring to the audience. Be sure to mention specific episodes of the show that you’ve enjoyed, and to offer a few topic ideas that you would be willing to discuss. If you have guested on a show, include a link so the host can see what it’s like when you are interviewed.

3. Be prepared to answer questions.

Before you record your episode, take some time to think about the questions that the host might ask you. This will help you to give clear and concise answers, and to avoid rambling. It’s also a good idea to have a few stories or anecdotes prepared that you can share to illustrate your points.

4. Be yourself.

The best podcast guests are the ones who are authentic and genuine. Don’t try to be someone you’re not, and don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through. The more comfortable you are, the more enjoyable the episode will be for the listener.

5. Promote the episode.

Once your episode has aired, be sure to promote it on your social media channels and website. This will help to reach a new audience and to drive traffic to your business. You can also encourage your listeners to leave reviews of the episode on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

Here are some additional tips for being a great podcast guest:

Be on time. This is a sign of respect for the host and the audience.

Have a good mic and internet connection. This will help to ensure that your audio is clear and professional. The best low end mic is a Clearchat headset. My clients who are choosy at the higher end like the Blue Yeti mic.

Be engaged and enthusiastic. This will help to make the episode more interesting and enjoyable for the listener.

Listen carefully to the host’s questions. Don’t interrupt, and take your time to answer each question thoughtfully. But don’t talk for too long of a time unle

Be prepared to share your story. People are drawn to stories, so don’t be afraid to share your personal experiences and insights.

Be respectful of the host and the audience. Avoid using offensive language or making controversial statements.

Here are some examples of topics that you could pitch to podcast hosts:

Your expertise or area of specialization

Your personal story or journey

Current events or trends in your industry

Tips and advice for listeners

Case studies or success stories

Interviews with other experts in your field

Being a podcast guest can be a great way to reach a new audience and promote your business or expertise. By following the tips above, you can increase your chances of getting booked on podcasts and being a great guest.

Starting a podcast can be a daunting task, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. If you’re passionate about a particular topic, and you’re willing to put in the work, you can create a show that will inform, entertain, and inspire your audience.

One of the first things you need to do is choose an avatar for your podcast. This is the person or persona that you will embody on the show. It’s important to choose an avatar that is relatable to your target audience, and that you are comfortable being. For me, I chose entrepreneurs who would like to change the world and bring in 7-figure incomes. These are high-performing entrepreneurs indeed. My guests help others grow and uplevel exponentially.

Once you have chosen an avatar, you need to set an intention for your show. What do you want to achieve with your podcast? Do you want to educate your listeners? Entertain them? Inspire them? Once you know your intention, you can start to develop the content for your show. For me, I sat down and mapped out themes for given days. My show desired to be daily – yo! why! It just did.
Mondays: Mo’ Money Mondays
Tuesdays: Tuesday Tool Days
Wednesdays: Wellness Wednesdays
Thursdays: Transformational Thursdays
Fridays: Fabulous Fridays
Saturdays: Skyrocket Saturdays
Sundays: Spiritual Sundays

Next, you need to name your podcast. This is an important decision, as the name of your show will be the first thing that potential listeners will encounter. Choose a name that is catchy, memorable, and relevant to your content. In my case, my daughter Isabel came up with the name. She knows how often I change. She said “Mom, just give it your name, then you can make it about anything you like.”

Finally, you need to infuse your podcast with character and iconic identity. This is what will make your show stand out from the crowd. Think about what makes your podcast unique, and what your listeners can expect from each episode.

Here are some tips for creating a podcast with character and iconic identity:

  • Be yourself. The best way to create a podcast with character is to be yourself. Let your personality shine through in your voice and your content.
  • Be passionate. If you’re not passionate about your topic, it will show. Choose a topic that you’re excited to talk about, and that you know a lot about.
  • Be consistent. One of the best ways to build a loyal audience is to be consistent with your podcast. Release new episodes on a regular schedule, and promote your show on social media and other platforms.
  • Be creative. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different formats and ideas. What makes your podcast unique? What can you offer your listeners that no other podcast can?
  • Be authentic. People can spot a fake from a mile away. Be genuine and authentic in your interactions with your audience, and they will reward you with their loyalty.

Here are some examples of podcasts with strong character and iconic identity:

  • The Joe Rogan Experience: Joe Rogan is a popular comedian and UFC commentator. His podcast is known for its long-form interviews with a wide range of guests, from celebrities to scientists to politicians. Rogan is known for his laid-back interview style, and his willingness to let his guests talk.
  • The Erica Glessing Show: Erica’s buoyant personality shines through as she interviews allstar entrepreneurs from all walks of life.
  • TED Talks Daily: TED Talks Daily is a podcast that features the best TED Talks from around the world. TED Talks are short, powerful talks on a wide range of topics, from science and technology to business and the arts. The podcast is a great way to learn new things and be inspired.
  • This American Life: This American Life is a weekly radio show and podcast hosted by Ira Glass. The show is known for its long-form, in-depth reporting on a variety of topics. Glass and his team of producers tell stories in a way that is both informative and entertaining.

These are just a few examples of podcasts with strong character and iconic identity. When you’re creating your own podcast, keep these examples in mind, and don’t be afraid to let your own personality shine through.

It was a blast interviewing former NFL and Heisman winner Ricky Williams on his journey — despite the concussions suffered.

Podcasts are a great way to connect with your audience, build your brand, and generate income. But if you’re a 7-figure entrepreneur, you’re probably not interested in just any podcast. You want to build an iconic 7-figure podcast. You’ll need a recipe.

Interviews that get remembered and shared

Celebrity guests or celebrity topics

Intensity, focus and passion

And a few more insights on how to do that:

  1. Choose a niche that you’re passionate about and that you’re an expert in. This will make it easier to create high-quality content that your audience will love.
  2. Identify your target audience and what they want to learn. What are their pain points? What are their goals? Once you know what your audience wants, you can create content that helps them achieve their goals. If you didn’t fully grasp it — dive into what keeps your perfect audience up at night. How can your podcast ease the pain? Solve the problem?
  3. Invite 7-figure guests to share their key learnings with your audience.
  4. Guest on 7-figure podcasts, elevating your own brand.
  5. Produce high-quality content on a regular basis. This means releasing new episodes on a consistent schedule. It also means making sure that your audio quality is good and that your content is well-edited.
  6. Promote your podcast. Share your episodes on social media, reach out to other podcasters to be a guest on their shows, and submit your podcast to directories.
  7. Monetize your podcast. There are a number of ways to monetize a podcast, including sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and selling your own products and services.

Here are a few additional tips that are specific to 7-figure entrepreneurs:

  • Focus on building relationships with your audience. One of the best ways to do this is to offer exclusive content or benefits to your subscribers. You can also host live events or create private communities for your listeners.
  • Use your podcast to promote your other businesses and ventures. This is a great way to cross-promote your products and services and reach a new audience.
  • Partner with other successful entrepreneurs. This is a great way to get exposure to their audience and learn from their experience.

Building a 7-figure podcast takes time and effort, but it’s definitely possible. By following the tips above, you can create a podcast that will help you achieve your business goals and generate a significant income.

Here are a few examples of entrepreneurs who have successfully built podcasts:

  • Joe Rogan is a comedian and podcaster who earns an estimated $30 million per year from his podcast.
  • Dave Ramsey is a financial expert and podcaster who earns an estimated $7 million per year from his podcast.
  • John Lee Dumas is a podcaster and entrepreneur who earns an estimated $3 million per year from his podcast.
  • Erica Glessing is a podcaster who built The Erica Glessing Show, a 6-figure podcast on an exponential growth curve.

These are just a few examples, of course. There are many other 7-figure entrepreneurs who have successfully built podcasts. The key is to focus on creating high-quality content that your audience will love and to promote your podcast like it matters more than anything else in the world. Or something like that.

If you’re serious about building a 7-figure podcast, invest in a podcast coaching program. A good coach can help you develop a strategy, create high-quality content, and promote your podcast so it can skyrocket for you.
